As night fell, the parade began. The ornate lanterns of paper and paint lit up the night, dancing over our heads as we walked down the darkening streets. Drums played and people cheered. The night air cooled but the warmth in the hearts of the festival-goers grew. Making our way from the university to the temple, the parades grew more and more elaborate. Simple hand held paper lanterns soon made way for giant paper sculptures, pulled on carts.

Incredible experience - wonderful pictures - all that is missing are the beads!
Mardi gras without the over-indulgence, wastefulness and other less than saintly pursuits.
