The stacked stones are a carry over of ancient Korean mysticism, from the old religions of long ago. They are silent prayers to the spirits of the earth and can be found in natural places such as forest paths and in this case, completely enveloping temple walls. They find their way into all the current religions of Korea, showing that the old ways never truly disappear.
